In the Beginning

We fight, we fight, we fight!!!!

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
(Matthew 24:12-14)

It is not going to get any better . . . we can see that in all that going on today. It doesn't take rocket science to figure it out. Listen to the news . . . compare political candidates . . . examine the crumbling structures of basic social norms and institutions.

Jesus warns: "Take head that no one deceives you". (Matthew 24:4)

Please do not be fooled by the empty promises of man. Yes, we continue to fight for righteousness and battle for the weak. We defend the poor and stand up for biblical values. But this is a fight only God will win . . . and He will . . . in His timing! Yet we remain His soldiers.

However, we must be honest with people, even when they turn a deaf ear. Even as man grows colder and colder and evil runs rampant, we hold up the Gospel and stand upon His Truths, regardless of the consequences. We echo the words of many who have gone to battle before us: we fight, we fight, we fight!!!!

. . . and God wins . . . live victorius today!!!!

Just For Men . . .

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
(Ephesians 5:25-28)

Ever sit under some great Bible teaching and think "Boy they could sure use that!" or "I can't wait to share that with_______." ? I know I have! many times we are quick to hear a word for someone else, but we find it hard to allow God's work to convict us personally. We are always more gentle when it comes to our own shortcomings! But guys, this is about you and me!

This word is just for men! Forget reading about the wives or the children guys . . . this is for us! Paul is specific in these few words of Ephesians5 and 6 to speak to wives, husbands and children. So let's pay particular attention to our part alone: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church . . .

These are challenging words indeed and humbling to the point of embarrassment . . . at least for me. We say we love our wives and would literally die for them, but Christ pleads for us to live for them as well! Just as Christ came as a sacrifice for each of us, we as the leaders of our families are to live in such a way that all that we do is for the best interests of our spouse. She is to be our focus, not "me"! All our prayers, all our plans, all our desires . . . should be to first honor our wives and be able to cover them from evil. If we can get to such a point in our walk and allow God to take care of the rest, imagine the joy we will experience!

Listen to Peter (a married man by the way):

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
(1Peter 3:7)

It is not that wives are any less a person or weaker in faith, but we as men are called to lead in every aspect of married life . . .to be accountable! This begins with our relationship to our Father! Our prayer life reflects our relationship with God and family. To better know our wives, we have to be intimate with God as well. After all, He created marriage! But on the other hand, if we are not right with our spouse, we cannot be right with God.

Men, it is time to get right. Single guys, do not even consider marriage until God is your first and primary love. Married men, it is God first! It is wife next . . . then kids. We . . . are last on the to-do list! Leave us to God. Besides, a good wife will never reject a Godly man.

Is It Clear?

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God . . .this is your spiritual act of worship.
(Romans 12:1)

As many times as I read this my most challenging verse in the Bible, it always hits my heart. The least I can do for God is to give my body over to Him to use! Last I checked, my body included my mind, my heart, my eyes, my hands, my feet, my belly, my biceps . . . do you get my point?

Is it clear whatPaul is saying here?

Paul (Saul)was such a zealot for the Jews before coming to Christ. In fact, he authorized the killing of Stephen. (Acts 8:1-3) he was determined to do away with the Christians. However, once he was convinced that Jesus was indeed the Messiah, he was even more determined that all be saved, especially the Jews! (Romans 9:3) We know how he suffered constant persecution for the sake of the Gospel.

As we enter the weekend, let's be challenged to once again offer all we are and all we do for the sake of Christ. Our prayers, our workouts, our diet, our personal relationships should all be geared to be God-honoring and sacrifical in nature.

Personally I am way too selfish . . . too worried about my agenda, my time, and my needs. I have to realize it is NOT about me, but God and others . . . all the time!

Do We Define Love?

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
(1 John 3:16-18)

How do we define love? JESUS! Love is all the things we read in 1 Corinthians 13. But more than that, love is defined within a person, namely Jesus Christ. As little Christ (Christians), when people see us, do they say, there goes love? Do they define us by our love?

John tells us here that if we have the necessary things of this world (material things that sustain life)than we are to freely share them with those around us. If God so loved the world (John 3:16) than we too are to be known by our love!

John ends these few lines by saying that if we are indeed of God, than we are to put love into action. Sacrifical love should define us! If we have it, we should be willing to share it! Whateve IT is, IT has been provided to us by God . . . so if someone is in need of IT, let's share IT!

The definition of love . . . are we included in IT?

Who Knows?

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
(Isaiah 55:6-7)

The prophet has an open invitation here in the 55th chapter to all who can hear: there is freedom in the Savior! There is complete salvation in the Lord. No matter our situation, we may find rest and forgiveness in Him and Him alone. Yet there is a time when He will not be found . . . the decision must be made while we are yet living!

Who knows how long that will be? How long will we live? How long until He returns? Who knows?

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
(Psalm 32:6-7)

David expresse the joy of forgiveness in Psalm 32. As he responded to God after the devastating events with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11), David expressed the relief of forgiveness, honesty before the Lord, and His comforting grace. Yet he still lets us know that time is of the essence! Sin has a way of overwhelming us and we do not know where to turn. We can get so deep and never get out . . . but for God!

God is waiting . . . but not forever. He is patient . . but there is a day when we all will held accountable! What about this day? Running out of time? Who knows when our time is up? Today is a good day to seek the Lord!

Keeping It Simple

Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.
(Luke 4:8)

Jesus is keeping it simple here . . . one God, one worthy of worship, one is to be served. Only God is to receive our honor and praise. We are created to serve Him alone. Even when Jesus was tempted by Satan, he kept it very simple by referring to Scripture(Deuteronomy 6:13). God's word rules over everything else!

Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
(Matthew 16:23)

We cannot allow ourselves to become a channel for Satan's message. Jesus warned Peter of this very thing. Any time we stand in the way of God's will, we are giving satan opportunity to speak and act.We must make every effort to be in His will and to be obedient! We cannot serve both the world and God's will.

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
(Matthew 6:24)

God first . . . God always . . . keeping it simple!

Common Sense or God-Sense?

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
(James 1:5)

Wisdom from God is not meant to get one out of trouble, but rather to give us keen insight to better learn from difficult circumstances. God does not share more information on how to avoid pitfalls and testings, but He provides a new and different perspective on trials we face.

God's wisdom begins with a genuine reverence for Him (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 9:10). One must possess a steadfast confidence in Him knowing God controls all circumstances. (Hebrews 11:6) God orchestrates all activities according to His good purposes for each of us, as we trust Him.

Common sense tells us to avoid tough situations and live a trouble-free life. God-sense tells us that troubles will come (Matthew 24), yet God makes a way out. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

How can one make any sense of this world . . . KNOW and TRUST the One who is in control!

Practice What We Preach

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
(James 1:2-3)

We all love to share this verse with others when they are suffering through trials and tests in life. However, it is a hard pill to digest when we are going through! Nevertheless, it is sound advice from the brother of our Savior . . . one who knew testings!

This phrase, testing of your faith, refers to being approved, as used to examine coins for their authenticity. As our faith is tested, just as Abraham was, we become battle-ready and being able to stand! Adversities turn into opportunities as a result. We may not see it at the present time, but God is preparing us for better things.

So let's consder our own advice and that of James: hang in . . . do not quit . . . God is with us as we are struggling through the present day's adversities. Let's practice what we preach and allow God to continue to mold and shape us. He has this too!

Me Last . . . Even When It Hurts!

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
(Matthew 7:12)

It's hard when you have been hurt or are hurting to think about others. Some times we just want to focus on me! However, the more we focus on God and His word, the more we can begin looking outward. We come to realize that no matter what we are going through, it could be worse. As we receive God's love and care, we begin to be comforted and that in turns pours out to others in need. Even in our personal suffering, we can encourgae someone else. We realize how much we indeed are blessed and we become a blessing to others.

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
(Leviticus 19:18)

When we are hurt, it is easy to lash out. It is easy to place blame. It is quite human to withdraw and seclude ourselves. But cusing others pain will never make things better. The blame game is useless. Withdraw unto God and His word and allow others to pray with and for you. If seclusion is necesarry, bring the Bible and get alone with God.

He knows our sorrows. (Psalm 31:7) He too was hurt. He too was left alone. He too was abandoned. Yet He thought of us all as He bowed His head upon the cross. He still has you and me in mind today, even as we are going through . . .

It was me last for Jesus. It must be that way for those who are called by His name as well . . . Me last, even when it hurts!

Keep Running!

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
(1 Corinthians 10:13)

I know we cannot quite understand why God has us go through things. We plead with God . . . "Not now!" . . . "Please God, I just can't handle this at this time!" . . . "God you know this is a bad time."

And yet God does know and He does care and He does provide us with all we need to keep running the race . . . with HIM by our side, even carrying us!

Most of us recall The Footprints poem: I love how it finishes.

"The times when you have seen only one set of footprints, is when I carried you."

God has prepared each of us for the times we are facing . . . and will face. He gives us grace and power to endure. That endurance will bring its own reward as well. (1 Corinthians 9:24)

Hang in there . . . keep running . . . God is with you!

Attitude and Servitude

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
(Philippians 2:14-16)

We may not say it out loud very often, but the quiet whispers and bitter mumblings can keep us from serving the Lord as we should. It can certainly taint our influence in the world. Paul warns the Philippian church to be sure that their testimony is blameless. There is enough dissention in the world . . . enough hatred and jealousy. There should not be within the church. We are to be one body, working together to serve others and bring glory to our Father. This certainly cannot happen if there any fissures within our ministries.

We need to remember that we are lights to this darkening world (Matthew 5:14)therefore we must reflect the attitude and servitude of Jesus Christ!

Freedom Is Not Free

(In Honor of Martin Luther King)

“But God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:8)

God loved us while we were yet His enemies, still sinners; Christ went to the cross for us. Many people would die for a friend or a family member, but for an enemy? Now, that’s love. That sacrifice allowed man the chance for spiritual freedom: freedom from sin and eternal separation from God in an eternal hell. We have the freedom to choose to accept that gift from God or reject it, but we have the freedom to choose.

That freedom, however, came at a great cost. Christ laid aside His glory in heaven to accept the brunt of all our sin. He received the beatings, the spitting, the insults, the cross, just for you and for me. He experienced a separation from His Father so we would not have to do so. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE … it costs!

“We have come to know love by this: that Jesus laid down His life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians. But whoever has the world’s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.”
(1 John 3:16-18)

Jesus laid down His life … His life style for us. His life was lived on our behalf. He gave up His will for God’s will for Him and for our redemption. As I honor the life and work of Dr. King today, that’s what I take away from his sacrifice. He gave up a life of pastoring, of a husband, of a Daddy and took on the will of the people. I’m sure it was God’s will for his life as well. He became the face of civil rights for all people; rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States and by the cross of Christ. No doubt, Dr. King’s family missed a lot of time he could have been at home. His church lost out on some one-on-one counseling and some dynamic Sunday preaching and Bible study. His dedication to the needs of the people came at a price: his personal time, his family time, his time with his church, and ultimately his life!

Dr. King laid down his life for everyone in need; black, white, Christians, and non-believers. Here is my question: How will you honor the legacy of Dr. King and the ultimate mandate of God upon your life as a believer? This is not so much a race issue or even a civil rights issue anymore. It’s an issue of our basic Christian life. Whom are we living for? What will be said of you and me at our going home service? Are we laying down our lives for anyone: a friend, family, fellow believers, neighbors, for God’s will?

We here in the U.S. have more than anyone, yet we complain we don’t have enough! We hoard, we invest, we save, yet we refuse to give from our need. We’ll gladly give from our excess, sure. But will we lay down our desires, give from our basic possessions, sacrifice our very lives for someone’s need, as Dr. King and so many others have done over the years? It takes a special person. It takes a person controlled by God’s Spirit and given over to His will.

What bigger need does a person have than to feel the love of Christ and to know Him personally? In honor of Dr. King, may I challenge you to lay your life down and love in deed and truth? Will you commit to give as you see a need, not as you have extra? Will you help someone you may not even like or someone who does not think highly of you? Can we live as real brothers and sisters, not known by the color of our skin but by the content of our character? Oh, that’s still a dream in many areas, isn’t it?

I thank God for Dr. King’s sacrifice and for the sacrifice of all who have laid down their lives for our freedoms. Even today, in 2012, we cannot put a time limit on the pain folks have suffered. We can however, live in such a way that honors all people and portrays empathy and genuine love and concern. It would also help if we ALL had a correct view of HIStory, not a view from only one side. Take the time to understand!

We cannot disregard race, or the discriminations and prejudices will go ignored. Most of us still have unerlying issues of prejudice to work out if are truly honest with ourselves. Ther is a glaring need to openly, honestly, and RESPECTFULLY discuss the real issues of life and realize that ONLY THROUGH CHRIST we can all be one!

Don’t get too comfortable, there is still a price to pay! For me and my family, the fight is not over until we all are one under the blood of Christ! FREEDOM ISN’T FREE! Are we willing to lay it down?

God's Intentions

So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong. He repays a man for what he has done; he brings upon him what his conduct deserves. It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice.
(Job 34:10-12)

The much younger Elihu responds to Job and the other older gentleman with such wisdom. He has to remind them that God never does evil. He cannot do wrong! He is always faithful and just. If we are to be a people of understanding, we need to first know who God is and how He acts. God's intentions are for our good . . . David's words would fit well here:

The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD (are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can discern their own errors?
(Psalm 19:7-12)

God has a plan for each of us. The more we understand God and the more we understand His character, the better we can go through life and its ups and downs. We cannot understand this life with our own understanding. God is pruning us, whether with correction or direction! He knows what is best for us in order to be the best for His sake.

Paul says it well in Romans:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose.
(Romans 8:28)

The present sufferings, disappointments, frustrations, even the successes we are going through are merely steps we go through to fulfill God's perfect will for us. Are we willing to accept the life God has for us? Do we seek God's intentions or our own? rust Him . . . He is still in control!

We Have to Take the Steps

After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
(Joshua 1:1-9)

Whatever the vision, whatever the plans, whatever the challenges . . . we must take the steps necesarry to accomplish the tasks. God is looking for a few courageous folks today . . . to get out of the boat and trust Him.

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
(Matthew 14:22-31)

Jesus went away from the disciples and let them alone on the water. Things got tough . . . Jesus was there but they did not quite recognize Him. Things were hazy . . . not very clear . . .

Peter needed some reassurance . . . he followed after Jesus, but lost sight of Him and began to sink below the surface . . .

BUT Jesus reached down!!!!!! Jesus REACHED DOWN . . . get that! Even as Peter began to take those little baby steps by faith, Jesus reached down to lift him up and carry him through!

Are we ready to take the steps to follow after the plan Jesus has for us? He stands ready to assist when we nmost need it!

Get out of the boat!

More Than Enough!

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
(Philippians 4:12-13)

Since submitting to a life of ministry in 1998, our family has lived out this very dream . . . to serve God and rely upon Him as our Source! As missionaries, God has given to us a vision . . . and we live it out by faith, because many times we literally cannot see beyond the moment with human sight! We live to carry out His plan for us day-by-day, because He just may return tomorrow! Though we plan for the future . . . that future is always in Christ. Our family has a motto . . . work hard, play hard! There are times when we have been so blessed with summer vacations, weekends in the mountains, a dinner at a nice restaurant, even a car! There have been other periods when we have faced foreclosure, been in need of food, or prayed for CHRISTmas gifts for our children. Family does not always understand. Friends have misjudged us at times. Srangers look at us . . . well they look at us rather strangely at times! Yet we know God has us in the palm of His hand. To share what a friend of ours in New Orleans says . . . We have bet the farm on God!

We have decided to trust the Lord . . . we have no choice but to serve Him. (Joshua 24:15) It is awesome to join God in His work . . . in His joy . . .even in His sufferings. There is no better vocation. In reality, through all the ups and downs, we realize we have more than enough . . . we have God!

But I'm Not Jesus!

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
(1 Peter 1:15-16)

But I'm Not Jesus! . . .How many times have we heard this? How many tmes have we actually said it? Yes, we are sinners, but because of His grace, becasue of His sacrifice, because of His Spirit dwelling within us . . . we can do it! We can be holy . . . and sin less and less!

I did not say it, Jesus did . . . listen!

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
(John 14:12)

Since we have the Holy Spirit within us, if we allow it complete control, we can do as Christ did . . even more Jesus said! The key to this is giving up . . . giving up control and handing over the keys to the Holy Spirit! Let Him be our guide and our strength. We can do all things . . . (Philippians 4:13)but through Christ, not through our own determination or power.

We can indeed be like Jesus. We can be holy . . .One minute at a time.

My first, my last, my everything!

My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
(Psalm 62:7-8)

Is there ever a time not to trust in God? If we actually think about it, everything we have is because of God and depending upon God! So let's be real, he is the believer's everything! He is my first, my last, my everything . . .

David addresses this wisdom psalm to the choir director, Jeduthun, whose descendants actually founded a temple choir (1 Chronicles 16:41-42). It urges a quiet confidence in God concerning the enemies the people are facing. It challenges the believer that when all is said and done, God is victorious!

What are we challenged with this day? David urges us to pour out our hearts to God. No matter the challenge, he has it! As we trust Him, our faith grows and others see it as well. We can be a witness to others through our struggles, our victories, and even the small ups and downs of life. God is present and we must come to realize that He cares and He is more than able to get us through!

He is still Alpha and Omega . . . the first, the last . . . MY EVERYTHING!

A "Designer" God

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. (Matthew 6:28-29)

With CHRISTmas a recent memory and visions of shoppers lined up to buy the newest designer shoes, handbag, or electronic equipment, I cannot help but reflect upon our designer God . . .

Jesus reminds us in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) that God indeed gives us all we will ever need and that in fact it is better than we could ever produce! His name is engraved in all ceation and the product is perfect. Man can do nothing but ruin the works of God . . . never improve upon them. Yet we still seek more . . . better . . . bigger. Will God ever be enough?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the the earth.
(Genesis 1:1)

God is the designer . . . better than calvin . . . more attractive than a polo . . . and more functional than an apple. God makes better stuff . . . period!

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
(Genesis 1:31)

God created the world in a mere seven days! It's still very good, even after we have done our best to destroy it. Yet we still seek a better way. We still need more things to make life better. We still want God and something else! Is being made in His image not enough?

I heard that grown men and women stood in line for hours just to get the latest sneaker. I wonder how many of them would stand in line for a Bible study or even a CHRISTmas service? Will they be in line when God stands at the register?

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
(Revelation 20:12-15)

What are we shopping for anyway? Whose name do we need stamped upon our lives? He is a Designer God after all!

Don't Worry . . . You Are Not Lost

The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.
(Zephaniah 3:17)

I guess I realize that I am getting old because I am beginning to have dreams about the future and where my wife and children will be . . . I think of how they will react when I pass on . . .I wonder how long I will live . . . I even pray for a certain number of years if possible. But one thing I am sure about . . . I am not lost and neither are they! Anyone who knows Christ personally has a secure future.

Just last evening I was awakened from a dream where I was searching for my youngest son Michael. I was frantic . . . where is he? There had been some sort of disaster and people were everywhere. While I did find him in my dream, once awake I pondered the future if I was not around . . . are my children secure? . . . have I bulit into them the promises of Scripture? . . . will my wife be prepared for life without me?

Then I realized I was being selfish in a way. They all trust God in their own way. They all profess a faith in the Savior. God has them! While it was satisfying to know this, I still began to plead with God for days to be with them, to teach them, to enjoy life with them so it would make the reunion in heaven even that much more enjoyable. Though I lost sleep, I gained some peace . . .

God wants us to be at peace. As the prophet encouraged the people above, He wants us to live without fears, without despair, and without an attitude of resignation. God is not only with us now, but those who know Him will be with him for eternity! Here Zephaniah speaks of a people beyond the rivers of Ethiopia way beyond his knowledge of known territories at the time that would honor and praise God! It is encouraging to us todaythat God sees beyond our vision and plans. If we know God, despite the circumstances we can be encouraged . . . Don't worry, you are not lost! Jesus reminds us:

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
(Luke 19:10)

Jesus came to save us from this world of sin, disappointment, and despair. As we live, let us make the most of our days and influence everyone (especially family) concerning the things of God as long as we are able! The days on earth may be short, but the rewards in heaven are eternally ours!

Minimal Requirements

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
(Micah 6:8)

I am reminded this morning of a few of my most challenging verses in Scripture. God desires some minimal requirements of His children. The children of Israel, especially the leaders, had forgotten these standards. Justice, mercy, and a humble attitude are basic charateristics of worship. God gives us the strength, courage, and desire for Godly living . . . which is the basic form of worship to our God . . .how we conduct ourselves day to day!

Many of us believe that worship is what we do in church. I have come to understand that true worship is how we live each day . . . especially when our fellow church members are not around! James states this (James 1:27) and so does Paul in the following verses:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is . . .his good, pleasing and perfect will.
(Romans 12:1-2)

We cannot be caught up in the things of this world . . . even the surface activities of the church. God is concerned about our hearts. Our motives need to be to please and honor God and to bring Him glory. We need to put others before ourselves. This kind of character will naturally spill over into worship and cause others to seek Him as well. It is the least we can do for a God who does it all!

Run in the Proper Lane

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ . . .
(Titus 2:11-14)

Grace allows the believer to share Christ with others, rather than shun them or ignore them. Grace allows the Christ-follower to fleee from evil and live under the control of the Spirit of God, ignoring the lusts of our flesh. Grace allows us to live in anticipation of the return of our Savior rather than focusing on the negativity and depravity of the present world. Grace allows us to run in the proper lane of our lives as opposed to being tossed and pulled and pushed by every passing fancy of life.

Grace, having what we do not deserve because of the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, allows the believer tp have hope in the midst of hopelessness. It allows us to persevere to the finish line. May we all echo Paul's words one day . . .

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day . . . and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

(2 Timothy 4:7-8)

Run in the proper lane
. . . the one leading to our Savior!

A Simple Resolution

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
(Matthew 5:16)

So many resolutions that never make it past the first few weeks of the new year. Here is a simple one for believers . . . God first! Let everything we do honor God and bring Him glory.

To do that, we need to be peculiar. (1 Peter 2:9) We need to stand out. We need to be extra-ordinary. We cannot tolerate the things of the world nor allow the world to censure us.

If we do indeed have Jesus within us then we need to reflect that light. It's not our light, but HIS. . . His will not ours . . . His applause, not man's.

A simple resolution . . . God first!

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.
(Matthew 26:41)

At the time when we all look back with hopes of improving for the future, Jesus has a warning: the spirit is willing but the body is weak!

We have all the best intentions: lose weight, do more for others, save more/spend less, volunteer more often, and on and on . . . .

However, let us heed Jesus' words: watch and pray!

Let's look around and honestly examine our lives with the aid of the Holy Spirit. Let's be real with Him and ourselves. Allow God to guide our plans. There is a way that seems right to each of us, but God knows what is best.

I am trying to follow God's resolutions for my life in 2012 and beyond . . . what about you? This will require much sacrifice and soul searching . . . and submission!

Pray for me as I pray for you!

Joy in This World!

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
(Isaiah 55:10-11

Folks may choose to ignore God and His Word, but it is beng spoken and taught all around them. We all are held accountable for what we know about God. Perhaps this is why so many are trying to stifle the Word from being written, spoken, and sung in public settings!

This CHRISTmas, take the opportunity to be LOUD for the Savior so folks can hear. Say "Merry CHRISTmas" and not Happy Holidays. Give a genuine smile and a genuine "Thank You" to the retail workers and others as you shop. Sing the words clearly as the carols play, so all may her that CHRIST THE SAVIOR is not just born, but He lives and rules today! His Word still cuts and divides . . . but we must use it!(Hebrews 4:12)

There is no easier time than CHRISTmas time to share His Word. Share his presence when shopping for and giving presents this year. There is JOY in this world and His name is JESUS!

Who is doing the driving?

He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
(1 John 1:3:8)

Satan is still a powerful foe, one we cannot fight alone. This is God's job. Our job is to trust God and leave this battle up to Him. We are to resist temptation and cause Satan to run! (James 4:7) Paul advises a young Timothy to flee temptations (2 Timothy 2:22)and pursue the things of God. Our focus should be on God, knowing He alone can defeat Satan and He will!

Just because one is saved does not mean Satan is not an influenece. Way too many times I hear comments concerning one's power over Satan and that he no longer can control them. Why then would James say:

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
(James 3:9-10)

Only the Holy Spirit (God) can control us. We have to put ourselves under the control of God and give the wheel over to Him. Ask Him and allow Him to steer us in the right direction. We cannot use our own understanding! (Proverbs 3:5-6) but rather must trust in God and His plans.

So who is doing the driving? I do not even want to be the co-pilot! I want God to take full control!!!

Do You Believe?

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
(John 3:16)

John was a simple writer . . . he stuck with a basic theme in his writing . . . believe and live. He in this ofte-quoted but seldom lived out verse, we hear the basic message of CHRISTmas . . . God so loved us all! The question is posed to us as it was to Niciodemus . . . Do You Believe?

It is a too-simple process: All one must do is believe? That's it? It does not cost me?

The prophet Isaiah wrote long ago:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
(Isaiah 9:6-7)

Among all the hustle and bustle of CHRISTmas it remains simple.
Is He our Wonderful Counselor, our Mighty God, our Prince of Peace? Does He rule our lives? Do we live for justice and righteousness? Do we believe?

This CHRISTmas, let's live out the love of the King and share His gift . . . of love!

Who is Our God?

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
(Matthew 6:24)

Every one wants to know that their life matters . . . to someone. Our life interests show up in our check book and on our to-do list. The Bible is clear that where we spend out time and money is where our heart is focused. What matters to us is the legacy we will leave behind.

Though I love sports and look forward to a good game, in reality, the games are over in a few hours. No matter how much time I invest in trying to stay in shape, the fact is I will die one day, no matter how good I look or feel. The money I spend on things that clutter my shelves, sit in my garage, or cover my body is in actuality only worth pennies!

What am I doing for eternity's sake? What am I investing in my family? I am just as guilty as the next guy . . . I must make better decisions when it comes to Whom I am serving . . . me or my God . . . me or the things that have eternal consequences!

Who is our God anyway? Let's re-read the challenge Joshua laid before the Israelites . . .

Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
(Joshua 24:14-15)

Ask my wife and she will tell you that I have room to improve. Ask my children and they will tell you where I have come up short. My prayer is that I am better tomorrow that I was yesterday. My desire is to leave a legacy of sacrifice and service, not selfishness and self-centeredness . I want my family to be able to say time with God and family was a priority in my life.

I want to be known as a bondservant of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:1). My desire is to leave a legacy that depicts dedication to God and family and not a litany of accomplishments of selfish deeds. May God be exalted and I be diminished in the years I have left to serve!

When asked: "Who was his God?", I want the answer to be crystal clear . . . The very same God of Abraham, Isaac, and the rest. He served the Lord!

May this be our prayer . . . that we serve the Lord and Him alone! Let HIM be our God!!!

What is your song?

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior . . .
(Luke 1:46-47)

Part of The Magnificat (Latin for magnifies) Mary's response to Elizabeth's greeting tells of all God has done for Mary and others over the years. She does not respond in pride or boasting . . . rather Mary boasts upon the Lord!

Her response ids just the way Paul instructs his audience:

Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
(1 Corinthians 1:31)

What is your song unto the Lord today? I realize all may not be well. We are facing economic struggles, health issues, family strife, and more these days, but God is still God! What would life be without Him? As the psalmist writes below, we are to sing a new song unto the Lord every day, because of Who He is . . .

Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
(Psalm 96:1-3)

Allow the Lord to put a song in your heart today . . . sing loud!

Will We Ever Be One?

But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
(Jonah 4:1-3)

Jonah did not like the people from Ninevah. He thought they did not deserve God's grace. He would rather die than see them saved! Yet God is the God for all peoples!

Racism has been around since man can remember. There has always been one group who believes they are better, deserve more, and have a right Lord over another. Will we ever be one . . . at least in the Body of Christ . . . especially in the Body of Christ?

I was at a seminar yesterday listening to a man explaining his experience with racism and just hearing the reponses from the audience (young, old, black, white and asian) let me know that it is still a challenge for even believers to trust one another. Skin color and ethnic cultures is still a dividing line. Sometimes, I wonder if people would rather have it that way!

One thing I do know: It does not please the Lord! Listen to a few of Jesus' words He shared with the father before He was about to go to Calvary:

I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
(John 17:20-21)

I realize it is difficult to overcome the past. But of Chrst can forgive our past . . . as far as the East is from the West, can we not at least try to put away the sins of our forefathers? Can we live in unity under the grace of God. If we say we love God, but hate our brothers and sisiters, how can we possibly love God?

One Way Street to Success

Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
(Proverbs 16:3)

There is a one way street to success available today. It is not about money, education, favor, or fame however. It is all about following God however. To be successful in this world, one needs to take his focus off of this world!

We all have plans and this is a good thing. We all have dreams. But who is really able to establish those plans? Who knows the future? Who really nows us best? Yes, we have parents who guide us. We have teachers that teach. We have mentors who can nudge us along. But ultimately it is God who knows how we are wired, where we can excell and how we should mature and develop. Why ot give our plans to Him for a little tweaking?

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
(James 4:13-15)

We really do not know tomorrow. Will it even be here? Will we be here? God knows . . . He has been there and back!

Do we really want what God wants? This is the only true path to success that lasts an eternity!

A Healthy Fear Leads to Spiritual Health

He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.
(Psalm 145:19)

We all need a healthy fear of God! God is to be respected. He is to be honored and reverenced. God is to be lifted up above all things because of Who He is and what He does. He is God . . . He is I AM and we are not! He is the begining of all things and the ened of all things. God has always been and always will be. He is all that . . . period!

To recognize God for Who He is is the beginning of the relationship . . . the beginning of who we are as human beings . . . because we are created in His image by God! Without this recognition, we cannot be in a realtionship with God. A healthy fear of God leads to spiritual health. Everyone wants to be healthy . . . right?

When listing the hall of faith, the writer of Hebrews says this when speaking of Enoch:

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
(Hebrews 11:6)

To have faith in God requires a healthy fear and respect for God. We have to know Who He is and how He works. We have to seek after Him. God can only work with the ones who are willing to submit to Him.

To be physically healthy, one needs to eat a balanced diet, exercise, and have regualr check ups. It is not so different spiritually. It requires a balance of the study of God's word, prayer, and worship; the proper exercise of or faith in serving others; and the accountability with others of like faith.

How your health today?

Willing to do the Dirty Work?

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.
(Matthew 20:26-27)

Are we willing to do the dirty work? Are we willing to gird ourselves with the apron of service and get our hands and feet dirty? Are we willing to bow down, go into the trenches where life is taking place and really sacrifice for others? Are we willing to lay aside our comforts, our reputations, even our own lives for the lives of others . . . for Christ's sake?

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
(John 13:14-17)

This is the question we need to ponder this CHRISTmas Season and all the year through . . . Jesus did not consider it unworthy or embarrassing to serve us! Now . . . are we willing to do the dirty work?

In too deep to quit

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
(Galatians 6:9)

I am in too deep to quit . . . God has me and I will not give up!

I firmly believe what God has called me to do and I will not quit. Despite financial ups and downs, despite the criticisms of those who doubt, despite the remarks of those who just do not know. . . I press on . . . crawling at times, but nevertheless continuing to move forward!

Many times (since God called my wife and me into ministry) we have many logical reasons to throw in the towel. Whether it was a lack of support, illness, family struggles, or discouraging words from others.

But God never quits on us and we will not quit on Him! This is His work and we are just nobodies being used by God to accomplish His will. We may never see the results and our simple efforts may take generations to show fruit. God's plan will be carried out.

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
(Revelation 22:20)

We know God is at work and we are so grateful He asked us to join with Him. We work until He either calls us home or He comes back. Nothing or no one on this earth will stop our efforts. God is able to sustain us through it all.

Counting the Costs

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
(Luke 9:57-62)

Many have plans in life, but not many carry them through . . . . WHY?

We haven't counted the costs involved in the process of reaching our goals. It's not that the goals are too lofty or that we do not have the abilities, we are simply overwhelmed by the effort, the time, or the costs.

Anything worthwhile takes sacrifice: raising a family, gaining a degree, and yes . . . following the Lord! Here is another challenging word from Jesus in Luke's Gospel:

If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
(Luke 14:26-27)

Our commitment . . . our determination to follow Christ . . . our love for the Savior must outweigh every other thought or emotion we have! This has always been my goal, but not always fun for me or understood by others.

We love our family and friends, but when it comes to Christ, they come in second. Are we willing to pay that price? Will we carry the cross . . . the burdens of being a Christ-follower?

Countng the costs can be challenging but there are rewards!

The Power of God

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
(Isaiah 40:30-31)

I realize that at times we are just tired. It's simply a fact that we can wear out. While growing weary is ok and feeling a bit beaten down is normal, when we need it most, that is when God steps in! This is not to say we do not stop for a rest now and then, but in those crucial times, when we need that extra boost, nothing compares to the power of God!

When we have been up all night struggling with an issue; when that teenager has us at wits end; the baby was up all night and the alarm clock goes off too early; when the bills outlast the pay check . . . there is God!

When we get weary, there is hope in Christ. It is not an "I hope He helps me" or "I wonder when", but an anticipated and confident hope that just when we need it, God gives us the extra boost to carry on . . . so we carry on! We soar above the problems we face and continue, even grow stronger in our commitment to follow on in the path God has set us upon.

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
(2 Corinthians 12:10)

It's not that we are happy to be weary or to be worn down, but when we do face hardships, we know God will step up and carry us through. We know He will do the miraculous and thus we anticipate the results andas paul says, we delight in the circumstance!

It's not weird . . . it's the power of God which we all must call upon!

All Day, Every Day

Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
(Deuteronomy 6:5-9)

Moses called the Hebrews to respond to God's love with devotion. He is God all alone and there is no other like Him! He is the only wise choice to make in all situations . . . because of WHO He is!

As parents, God calls us to be the primary instructors of our families. Throughout the entire day we are to refer to the Lord. It should be natural to speak of God in our daily routine, pointing out the good He does and how He is involved in everything we do!

As parents partner with schools, we too need to be sure that our children are hearing about God and learning how He is not only involved in our spiritual life, but also in our physical life . . . God is in math, science, reading, writing. He is the center of how we understand the world and how we express ourselves.

Parents, teachers, ministers . . . we all have the charge to be sure to make God the center of our lives so our children will know how awesome He is. Our job is to partner together to be sure that God is ALL DAY, EVERY DAY inour children's lives.

Make it natural. Make it the custom to speak of God . . . point out His creation . . . describe His grace . . . mention His mercy . . . sing of His goodness. Let's be sure to prepare this generation for what is to come . . . because He is coming back!

Paul would say it like this:

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Know Jesus? No Fear!

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
(1 John 4:18)

It is who you know that counts! In life, we hear this quite often. If you know someone in the company, quite often, you will be hired. At leat it helps one get a foot in the door. In respect to where one spends eternity, it is ALL about who one knows!

Knowing that one day we all must face God can be a fearful thought. What will I say? How can I stsnd before God? How will I explain? Yet because of what Christ did on the cross, we all have an opportunity to know God personally through Jesus Christ! However it takes commitment. It involves a decision. There is only one way!

When Jesus was speaking with the disciples, Thomas inquired: Lord, how can we go where you are going? How do we know the way? Jesus' reply still stands today:

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
(John 14:6)

Living in fear of God can be devastating. Knowing the father through the sacrifice of Jesus brings peace beyond our human understanding. (Philippians 4:7) We all need that peace today! No one has to live in fear.

At CHRISTmas time there are many opportunities to share this peace. If we know, we are obligated . . . commanded to do so!

Know Jesus? No fear!

The last days . . . these days!

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy
. (Acts 2:17-18)

Peter begins his address to the crowds by referencing the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28-32). In times past, only the kings, priests and prophets would speak for God. The was a special annointing or unction upon one's life as God would use them to communicate to the people. But it would be different in the last days . . . these days we live in!

You see, when Peter spoke, this ushered in the last days . . . the days of the church. God has poured out His Spirit upon all who claim Jesus as Messiah and He now speaks through men and women alike . . . young and old who choose to call Him Lord and Savior. It is not just the pastor's job anymore. The time is now. The days are today!

I saw a reference to the NFL quarterback Tim Tebow yesterday. While some are upset that he speaks of his Savior at every opportunity, he speaks nonetheless. Athletes, musicians, husbands, moms, children are all given opportunity to share the Good News today. The question is . . . are we bold enough to do so?

What are we doing in these last days? Are we using the opportunities the Spirit is presenting to us to tell of our Lord and Savior? Time is short and people need to know. Will we tell them?

Work Incentives

But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
(2 Corinthians 10:17-18)

Everyone wants a bonus. Every employee who enters a job works to be commended at some point . . . to be recognized for doing a good job. We all fall for the trap of putting "I" before the things we experience. It is human nature. However, as believers, no matter what we do, no matter who the earthly boss is, we actually are working for the Lord and we seek His approval and His commendations. In need of work incentives today?

Consider these challenging words from Paul:

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.
(Colossians 3: 17-25)

We are instructed that wherever we find ourselves (at home, or at work)we are to keep in mind that we live and breathe to please the Lord! Whether we are sweeping the floor at home or preparing a report on the job, we are presenting our work to Christ.

How is possible to boast or our achievements, our families, our relationships, or anything we have accomplished without first mentioning the Lord? Before we attempt to say we deserve anything, consider all Christ has done for each of us . . . even just the basic necessities! Before we hurt ourselves patting ourselves on the back, let's get on our knees. We should get all the incentive we need as look up . . . from the foot of the cross as our Savior completed His job for each of us!

God is all the incentive we should ever need to serve our families, serve at our jobs, and serve our local church. We are indeed servants and nothing else! Is he not worthy of our efforts?

Now That's Confidence

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
(John 11:25-26)

John reiterates this theme throughout his gospel . . . believe and live! It is a not simply a acknowledgement that Jesus is the Messiah. It is not just knowing that He is who He says He is. It is a heart-felt dedication . . . a deep commitment. . . an assurance that Jesus is Lord and Savior! If this is so, then one will have eternal life in Him and a hope for the future.

For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?
(Romans 8:24)

Paul agrees with John: Hope for the believer is an assurance, not a guess or a pipe dream. As with all the "I Am" statements of Christ in the Gospel of John, we trust that Jesus is our basic need for life, our food, our light, our shelter, our guide, our connection, and our hope for the future!

Knowing Him personally gives us stength and confidence to carry on throughout difficult days and months, sometimes years. Knowing Christ makes the difference between giving up and going forward. It's the reason we get up to face a new day. Even though we know we face unknown struggles and unforseen circumstances, we trust that the Lord knows already and will be there with us.

Even when we face death, we know we have life . . . now that's confidence!

Do you believe?

Be Careful What You Ask For . . .

But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
(1 Samuel 12:24)

Be careful what you ask for . . . either by petition or by lifestyle. The Lord may just allow us to have our desires. God loves to grant our prayers. He wants to bless us. Yet at times, we get so persisitent concerning the things we want and what we think is best and God just allows us to have them . . . with the obvious consequences!

Many times it is a lifestyle contrary to His will. Other times it may simply be something or someone we desire that is not best for us. In this case in 1 Samuel, the people wanted a king other than God, so God said ok, I'll let you have a king, but you better remember my ways! Well, they did not and we all know the result (with King Saul). We are much better off accepting God's will over our own every time!

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart
.(Psalm 37:4)

Yes God wants to see us happy, but in His will. He wants to care for His children in ways He knows is best. However, we can get very selfish and boastful. We get caught up in me and my life. Rather, let us consider James' advice here:

“If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
(James 4:15)

God's ways are always best for each of us. As we serve Him He will supply all we'll ever need!

Not Done Yet!

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 3:13-14)

We all have a past! We all have said and done things we regret. Even apologies may not have made things right. But as Paul says here, we have to move on. We cannot dwell on the things we have done or the things people think about us. We have to move on and know what God thinks about us and what he has planned. He is not done yet!

God is at work in every believer and many times it is our own past that keeps us from believing God and His plans for our future. We have a hard time letting go. Our memories haunt us. People from our past remind us of what we used to be and what we used to do. "Know way God can use me" we think.

Yet if David could say:

as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us,

(Psalm 103:12)then we too can have the confidence to press on in this life and heavenward.

We may not experience the pleasures in this life from our labor. Knowing we are working for the Lord and His purposes may have to be enough. However, in light of those heavenly rewards, we keep moving forward and not looking back. We are not seeking the praise of people. We are not trying to convince them that we have changed. Our actions will reveal that! We work to honor the Lord and let the rest be up to Him!

He's not done yet!

Up Early and Anticipating the Prize

"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
(Matthew 6:21)

Getting prepared . . . mapping out strategies . . . up early , perhaps not even sleeping . . . willing to wait in long lines . . . anticipating the prize . . .of Black Friday!

I am not saying it is anything wrong with saving some money . . . in fact it is good stewardship! But really!?!? Some reaaly do take way beyond reality. Ok, so you saved the cash to get the specific gifts that those specific people can really use at some really ridunculous prices. I get that.

A big screen TV for $200.00 . . . kids clothing for $5.00 . . . tools at dollar store prices . . . appliances and even cars and trucks at half-price. However, we all have seen the shoppers who simply push their way in line, buying the first (or last) item that no one really needs just to say they (or their child) will have it! Many are also using every last bit of credit to do so . . . many times opening up a line of credit at the store! Now we have to hit the brakes!

S-C-R-E-E-E-E-C-H!!!!!

How many of us plan out our worship this way? How many anticipate the day that Christ returns with such passion? How many of us will spend our savings on missions rather than the newest i-phone? I'm just sayin' . . . .

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
(Matthew 6:31-33)

There are some big decisions to make this year for most families as it is for ours. Let us ponder this thought on this Black Friday:

What About the Family?

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
(Ephesians 4:1-6)

Like Paul, we are locked in with Christ. But it is not by chains that keep us in bondage, but bonds that free us from sin and the restrictions of this world! However, now that we have experienced such freedom from such a gracious God, we need to live it out so the world can see.

There is no room for sectarian spirits . . . attitudes that divide the family of believers and cause division from church to church. We are to make every effort to maintain and even improve our unity! In the early church, public baptism identified one as a Christian. In this day, our public expression of love, grace, and unity needs to be seen and felt by those who come into contact with family members.

Listen to Jesus' words . . .

I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world . . . will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
(John 17:20-23)

I love my family! I am fortunate to also have biological family members who belong to God's family. In the brief eighteen years of my service for Christ, I have been blown away by the love, care, and support from my immediate family . . . my home church. When I have been rejected by blood, those who are under the BLOOD have been there for me. When family have not understood, those in God's family have been able to encourage and support me. I have come to understand what one Body means. I have come to cherish real family.

Though I still love, miss, and pray for the family God birthed me into, I cherish so much the family He has made available to me in the Church . . . my home church and the many I have met in mission travels. These family members have filled in the gaps and voids I have experienced over the years as I have faced loneliness, separation, character assaults, changes in careers, relationships, and other issues.

Yet most of all, I am thankful for my bride and children (and grandchildren)that God has allowed to me. His love and grace is reflected in their love for me. He has shown me myself many times in my marriage, my treatment of my children, and other family endeavors.

God has blessed me indeed . . . despite the things I do not have, I have so much!
I am learning to be content, whether full or in need. I know God has my best interest in mind and that He is still working things out. I have to trust Him and where He has me . . . in one Body and under the rule of one Lord!

I thank my God and my family for all I have this Thanksgiving!

Not Much to be Thankful About?

Folks may say there's not much to be thankful about these days . . . well look around!

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story . . .
(Psalm 107:1-2)

We have been quiet for too long! We, yes we who know the Lord have to shout out the goodness of God, despite what the world is going through. We know the God who saves, delivers, and provides abundantly!

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.
(Psalm 107: 21-22)

When things are not as good as we want them to be, in these times we can fall into the trap of complaining. It's easy to get get caught up in why this is wrong, that does not make sense, or why he or she is doing something. Read the papers . . . search internet highlights . . . watch the news. There is always room for complaint, whining, or crticism.

Yet NOW is the time to stand up and go against the crowd!

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
(Psalm 107:31-32)

At times it is easy to give praise. Other times it is a sacrifice to give praise. If we use the Latin oblatio we think of sacrifice as an offering unto the Lord. An oblate is one dedicated to the Lord, devoted to serve Him.

We can always offer God our gratitude, appreciation, and our love. He did not have to do it . . . not for me!

Still think there's not much to be thankful about these days?

Made Well . . .

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
(Ezekiel 36:26-27)

No one can change without the Holy Spirit! Many students have asked me recently how do we know someone is saved? My reply is simple . . .

only God really knows

. He has to do the surgery on our hearts Himself.

Living up to man's requirements does not get one into heaven. While it is good to follow our spiritual mentors and lead a good life, doing all the good things expected of a believer, even that does not translate into forgiveness of sin and eternal life with our Lord. It requires cutting, trimming, and even some removal.

One must be made well . . . transformed, from the inside out. Only God can perform the necessary spiritual surgery that changes the heart from stone to flesh.

Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
(John 3:6-7)

Having recently been through some minor surgery to repair damage done over years of sports and weight training, I better understand the process. Only the doctor could see the damage. I looked pretty good on the outside, but I felt the pain. Even on an x-ray, I could not make out the fragmented bone spurs on my shoulder, but the doctor knew. He had to go inside my flesh and grind away debris from years of activity.

It is similar with our spiritual heart. From the human perspective, we may appear holy, clean, and pure. We do the right things: church attendance, bible study, ministry events, giving . . .but God knows the motives and the real committment level! And we feel the pain deep inside . . .

While I still feel the pain of the surgeon's tools, I too want to feel the presence of God's hand upon my heart. I want His correction . . . His cutting and pruning . . . and His healing! May we all be made well by the Surgeon's hand and experience His total forgiveness.

No Cross . . . No Crown

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
((Hebrews 12:1-2)

The previous chapter in Hebrews describes the many who went before the author and endured so much for the rewards faith in Christ offers. Even today, I can look around me and realize so many God has put into my life to instruct, admonish, and encourage me. I have witnessed their faith, their perseverance, and the peace they experience as they continue in their sacrifice to serve God.

And so I run. . . No matter the circumstance I cannot quit: on family, on relationships, on my job, on God. Nothing is too hard for God. I have read it sure, but I have seen it. I have seen my wife, my pastor, my co-workers, others God has put into my life endure hardship for the Lord. I have experienced it for myself time and time again.

. . .but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
(Isaiah 40:31)

Let's focus on the finish line . . . No cross, no crown!

Family Values

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
(Romans 12:10)

Brotherly love ... I do not believe that description is properly understood today. Family affection is not what it was in the past. Loving someone like a brother . . . what does that really mean today?

Remember when your could fight your own brother, but no one else could? Remember when blood was thicker that water? Nowadays, many families do not even get together for birthdays and holidays anymore. But it should not be that way in the Body!

We who name the name of Christ should have a kindly affection toward one another . . . a love that cause others on the outside to be jealous and desire it for themselves. We should be known by our love and self-sacrifice toward one another.

Paul lays it out clearly . . .

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death . . .even death on a cross!
(Philippians 2:3-8)

If our Lord and Savior could step down from heaven's glory to serve us, we can (out of love) put our own selfish ambitions aside to honor Him and those around us. As Jesus gave Himself for us, God was glorified and His will accomplished. As we esteem others, we lift up Christ and he can work through us. As we assess ourselves, we see others in a better light. As we do things through God's perspective, we see ourselves in such need that we serve others above our own desires.

I need you . . . you need me . . . we all are part of God's B-O-D-Y! Oh how I pray for the strengthening of family values . . . beginning first in the family of God!

Guidelines for Young (and Old) Folks

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
(2 Timothy 2:22)

Practically speaking, how can a young person possibley stay pure and morally grounded in these days? Paul gives some really sound advice to a young Timothy above. God always gives us a choice. Here it is very simply: flee evil and run after (pursue) righteousness. Stop running after all the things everyone else is trying to attain and focus on the plans God has for you. This requires decisions and dedication.

Listen to this psalm of wisdom . . .

How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.
(Psalm 119:9-16)

One has to know His Word in order to live it out. There are things that must be avoided in order to follow God and His guidelines. Foolish things of the world (idle time, wasted time, laziness, too much time doing nothing )and taking unwise paths on a whim, just to be one of the guys can snuff out a life. Days must be planned out with wisdom. Young people have such a future, but it cannot be attained by following others' designs for their lives! God has a perfect plan and to discover it it takes time with God and His people, not the world and its ways. It takes heart . . . all of the heart . . .dedication. Just as an athlete or musician spends hours a day perfecting his craft, one must be dedicated to spend time with God. One must pursue virtue in this day . . . it is not offered nor preferred everywhere!

Here is another clear outline from another familiar wisdom psalm . . .

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.
(Psalm 1:1-2)

The one who spends time with the things of God is happy . . . successful . . . and fulfilled. It is a fact: We become the company we keep! It is a choice we make daily.

Very simple guidelines for young (and old) folks today.

God is still God!

The Good Things About Our Youth

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
(1 John 4:4)

We hear so many negative things about our kids today . . . they do this thing and will not do that thing. They aren't like we were. These kids today are __________ (fill in the blank).

May I offer some suggested fill-ins?

The kids today are gifted.

The youth of today are full of promise.

The young people today have God's attention.

The teens of today are begging for our support . . .

The children today are no different than we were when we were young!

Our kids today do need one thing . . . Godly men and women to lead them! Kids do what they see being done. They still follow leaders!

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
(Proverbs 20:7)

How can we possibly be the kind of father, mother, or role model for so many of our youth? Well, it starts with just one or two. Obviously if we have children, we need to be there for them. NO EXCUSES! If we lean upon God, He will give us all we need to be a Godly example and guide for out kids. But we have to first commit to God ourselves.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:19)

Finally, we who are willing need to pray that God will lead the kids to us or lead us to them. One would be surprised how God can answer that prayer . . . Boy, do my wife and I have some stories to tell!

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
(Psalm 68:5-6)

God is able . . . are we willing? The good thing about our youth is that there is still time. God has all the time in the world . . .Do we have the time to spare? Time to give of ourselves . . . time to share God's love . . . time to offer the Gift to overcome this world?

Deceiving Our Youth Today.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
(Jeremiah 29:11)

Writing on a Saturday is not my norm, but I am burdened for out youth this weekend. All my years of coaching, mentoring, and teaching, I have never been more afraid for our young people. While it is true that things will only get worse in this world, there is still God!

Knowing the Lord as I do now, that should be comforting. Being able to share His words with so many young people (our own and those God has given to us over the years), my desire is that they not simply trust me, but trust GOD! However, I am witnessing different results and it hurts deeply ...

The verse above from the prophet Jeremiah is not simply an Old Testament promise. It is not only repeated, but enhanced through our Savior. However, the enemy (Satan) is doing a great job of deceiving our youth today.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
(John 10:10)

Jesus is not promising riches, fame, or earthly success, but Satan is dangling just that before our kids. Instant gratification, blind from consequences, applause . . . applause . . . applause! Have it all now . . . live for today . . . there will be time for all that church stuff later . . . All this for what?

If I could just convince the young people that God is true. Satan still lies better than anyone. Please stop thinking you can wait . . .Our youth's future is NOW!

A young Daniel trusted God and even the king knew it! (Daniel 6:16) Jude knew it. (Jude 24) After all Paul went through, he too realized the promises of God!(1 Corinthians 15:57) If we expect the kids to follow, we who know the Lord have to set the example. We cannot give up. Like the Good Shepherd, we shall seek even just one.(Luke 19:10)

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
(Matthew 6:33)

Pray . . . pray . . . for our young folks, but do not stop there . . . we have to stay engaged. God did not quit on me and I will not give up on up youth!

It's Not My Money

The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty.
(Haggai 2:8)

This is one of the first Bible verses I was asked to memorize way back in 1993. It is when I first began to understand that it is really not about me! I guess God was setting me up for the future . . .

It's my money and I want in NOW!

What a familiar and humerous phrase, yet so real in this world. We all get really selfish with what we believe is ours!

When I begin to think of all the wasted effort I have put into working for me . . . it gets me dizzy! My plans . . . my future . . . my money!

As I am growing as a believer, I am coming to the realization that nothing is really mine! Not unlike Solomon . . . I am believing that pretty much all things in this world are worthless, except what we do for Christ!

The prophet goes on to say this:

The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. 'And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty."
(Haggai 2:9)

If we can just grasp this one message . . . It's all about God and His plans . . . we will have peace (satisfaction). Things will begin to make sense. The future . . . our legacy will be better than what we knew and experienced.

It's not my money . . . it's not my plans . . . it's all about God and His plans for us to prosper according to His will. The sooner we realize that . . . the better for all of us . . . especially those under our influence!

What Can Man Possibly Do?

I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mortal men, the sons of men, who are but grass, that you forget the Lord your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, that you live in constant terror every day because of the wrath of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction? For where is the wrath of the oppressor?
(Isaiah 51:12-13)

In Isaiah 51, the Lord calls the people of Israel to be conforted in Him, to trust in Him just as they did when He led them out of Egypt. He reminds them of all He has done to relieve them of man's wrath and oppression. There is salvation to come!

Of all God has done for you and me, not even to mention our promised eternal life with Him, when we really ponder it, what can man possibly do? C'mon, really think about this now . . . .

We have been forgiven of sin . . . freed from the bondage of this world . . . promised by the Creator to be taken to His home forever one day . . . and we fear man?

Oh I know the pressures of the economy, our children's college education, and our grandchildren's quality of life. However, if we trust in the promises of God, live a life visibly leaning on Him, and truly walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7)then again I ask, "What can man possibly do?"

The writer of Hebrews was not blowing smoke when he wrote:

Never will I leave you;never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
(Hebrews 13:5-6)

If more believers lived such a life, what would the watching world see? What would our children and grandchildren observe? As we ponder the future, let's look back over the years and remember the God who has conforted us, protected us, and provided for us. As Isaiah posed the question to the Israelites, may I put it to us today?

And where is the fury of the oppressor?
(Isaiah 51:13)

God is still God!!!!

Bruised in Battle . . . yet Better for It!

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:5)

The Lord is indeed victorious. The battle over sin and death has been won! However, he was severely bruised in the battle, yet we are better for it!

Not much in life comes without struggle, yet we even as BELIEVERS, like the easy way out. Human nature tells us to take the easy road. God challenges us to be bold and courageuous however.

Do you recall . . .even the Yellow Brick Road had struggles for Dorothy before she made it home! But along the way, she realized the value of family and the simple things we take for granted, like wisdom, courage, and love. What if she had turned back?

I was raised to be the one who spoke his mind. I have learned not to back down from challenges. I learned it from my mom, sports, my wife and (since becoming saved) from my pastor and others in the faith who who have been battle-tested can be trusted! It is not always the popular or the option thing however.

Jesus took on the fight for our souls and won. He wants us to go to battle as well. Like Jacob, sometimes we have to face the world, other believers . . . sometimes even God! It's ok to have differences among ourselves. It is even ok to struggle with God. . . .if it is done with respect, dignity, and with a desired outcome to become better! Recall Jacob's fight . . .But Jacob replied, "I won't let you go unless you bless me." The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered. Then the man said, "Your name will not be Jacob anymore. Instead, it will be Israel. You have struggled with God and with men. And you have won."

Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you want to know my name?" Then he blessed Jacob there. So Jacob named the place Peniel. He said, "I saw God face to face. But I'm still alive!" The sun rose above Jacob as he passed by Peniel. He was limping because of his hip
. (Genesis 32:26-31)

Jacob walked with a limp for the rest of his life. It reminded him of his struggle with God sure. It also reminded him of his personal relationship with God. I am sure it gave him confidence later.

As we struggle, do not be afraid to get a few bruises . . . face some conflicts . . . even lose a few along the way . . . to the glory of God! We will all be better for it.

Eternal Wealth

Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
(Proverbs 3:13-14)

Biblical values are dwindling today . . . that is obvious. With all the schools, all the knowledge, all the discoveries, nothing beats wisdom! Knowing information is nothing unless one can apply it and receive benefits from it. It is one thing to be smart . . . quite another to be wise and virtuous!

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but wisdom does not stop there. We must continue to seek out His truths and His experiences. Having so much knowledge and not knowing the Lord is worthless. What is the value of knowing things but not having any lasting impact. If one does not know God, than we are here today and gone tomorrow . . . life and knowledge becomes meaningless! However, if we know the Lord and refuse to grow in wisdom and virtue, that too does not make much sense.

God has so much to offer the believer. There are so many riches to grasp from God. faith is only the beginning . . .

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
(2 Peter 1:5-9)

Happy . . . blessed is the one who seeks wisdom, finds it, and continues to grow closer to God. It brings eternal wealth!

Repent . . . Repent . . . and be saved!

But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
(Ezekiel 18:21)

It is a simple message preached throughout the Bible, but not very popular today . . . REPENT and live! Jonah shared it relunctantly with those in Ninevah and an entire city turned around.(Jonah 3:1-10)Peter preached to the crowds (Acts 2:38) and thousands were saved! Many know of God today . . . even joyfully attend church, bible studies, and ministry activity. Folks by the thousands attend various congregations and support ministries worldwide. But how many have truly repented and been regenerated?

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
(1 John 1:9)

God promises to wipe away all guilt from all sin if we truly repent . . . admit our sinful condition and turn away from sin. Now this does not mean we will never sin again . . . but that is possible with the power of the Holy Spirit! I am still on the road of trusting God with my life, but more and more each day I realize how much I need Him. I truly am no good without Christ!

True forgiveness comes only through true repentance! Salvation is through Christ alone. Nothing we do aside from pleading the blood of Christ will suffice.

It is time to put a halt to the good times preaching and begin to seek the true word of God. Oh I thank God for the ones God has given to me since first hearing the Truth. I thank God for a wife who holds me to His Word. I thank God for His Spirit which keeps me humble. I am still far from perfect and in need of His grace, but thank God I realize it more than ever!

Sorry is not enough. There has to be a change! Repent . . . Repent . . . and be saved!

Screaming Out His Glory!

The heavens declare the glory of God;the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.
(Psalm 19:1-6)

Take the time today to observe what David saw. Hear what nature is saying! No words, yet wondeful praise coming from what the Creator has set before us. Nature screams out the glory of God each morning with every sunrise and every evening as the sun rest upon the horizon.

What more shall we say . . . we who are made in His image . . . to our Creator God? Will we allow our very souls to magnify the Lord as Mary once did?

My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
(Luke 1:46-47)

When is the last time we reflected the glory of God in our simple living? In our everyday 24/7 walking and breathing, how do we proclaim God's works? When is the last time we were caught screaming out His glory?

Peace in a Person

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

(Matthew 6:25)

This world is not like it used to be! I can remember a bit from my childhood . . . sports, school, family . . . but never worrying about food, crime, the future. Oh, there were days when I wanted my special food and did not get it. There were rare times of riots and threats of danger. I would overhear my dad talking about a car repair now and then. There were neighborhood fights . . . over football, baseball and other games!

But it does not compare to this day: this is a day of trusting God! Who else can possibly understand this economy . . . this job market . . . this world's troubles like God? World markets going bankrupt . . .unemployment and under-employment . . . folks working out of their skill level and working 2-3 jobs . . .threats of war, violence, and crime even the least threatening neighborhoods.

Who can we trust? Where can we move to for security? Where can our chldren go for safety? Like never before, we can trust the words of the apostle Paul.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:6-7)

Are you facing health issues, a shaky housing situation, too many bills at the end of the month? In every situation, take it to God . . .trust Him and do as He directs . . .and leave it with Him. He has the answers! You will find peace in a person . . . JESUS CHRIST!!!!

Value in Discipline

My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
(Proverbs 3:11-12)

As a father of four and now a grandfather of five, I see the value in discipline. I really love my kids! I was not always right when I acted, but I acted in love! I do not want my children to fall into the same traps that were set for me!

The best thing we can do as parents is to raise our children with a working knowledge of God's Word so they KNOW the TRUTH and when left all alone in this world, they also can feel HIS presence. We have to let our children know that we are only given one life to live and we must be accountable to the Lord. We as parents are God's representatives to our children and unfortunately, we do not always do such a good job!

However, we have an oportunity to share the grace He gives each of us with our children! Admit our faults . . . apologize . . . change course if need be . . . but be real and be honest! Discipline is not always punishment, but always a guide and a teacher. If we do not discipline our children, we show a lack of love.

Just as God disciplines those whom He loves, we too have a responsibiility before God to be directly involved in our children's lives. Pursue them . . . especially in their teen years. Do not stand in the background. Even today, I am seeking my dad's respect and approval that I never received as a child. However, I have learned to seek after God's approval even more! Can we teach our children to seek after God . . . to please Him? When the world fails our children (and it will)there is ALWAYS the FATHER!

On a day when people regret decisions and even attempt to pray for those already dead and gone, we need to realize today is the day to be proactive. Today we need to make decisions to share the love (discipline)of God with our children and all young people, before it is too late! Tomorrow is too late!

Living Dead or Dead Men Walking?

I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true:

“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

(1 Corinthians 15:50-58)

Are you a part of the Living Dead . . . or one of the Dead Men Walking? While it is true that we all must die, as Paul reiterates above, we all must face God on that day.

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment . . . (Hebrews 9:27)

However, those who confess their sin and trust Jesus as Savior and Lord will not face the second death of eternity in hell . . . separated from God forever!(Revelation 20:6)Those who do not make the decision to follow after Christ are simply dead men walking . . . doomed for eternity in hell!

It is a simple choice on this day of celebrating gouls, witches, skeletons, and devils. Living or dead . . . who you 'gonna be? It's a choice!(Romans 10:9-10).

I choose life! (Joshua 24:15) I pray you will too . . .

A new creation out of a monster

In righteousness you will be established: Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near you.
(Isaiah 54:14)

Israel had been devastated, yet through the prophet, God promises the rebuilt Jerusalem even greater glory than before. (Revelation 21:9-27) it can be the same with you and me!

When I think back to my youth and young adult life . . . the things I did and the person I was . . . I can only thank God for His grace, mercy, and patience. Only He knew where He would have me this day! Before knowing the Lord in 1993 I was a dressed-up fool . . . looking good on the outside and a hot mess on the inside! Only God knew . . .

Everyone has promise. (Jeremiah 29:11) If He could rescue me, He can remake anyone's life, despite the things they are doing. Despite one's age, God can make a new creation out of a monster! (2 Corinthians 5:17). All one has to do is fall on their knees and ask the Lord to save them from themselves!

So what is our role? We have to introduce them to the Lord somehow. . . in words, in deeds, in sacrificial love. We have to take the time to care for them as someone cared for us!

If a dead seed can become a beautiful flower in the matter of weeks, think what can become of a life resued by the Savior . . . what can become of a shattered piece of clay in the Potter's hands?

Open Door Policy

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
(Matthew 6:14-15)

Do you have an open-door policy with those around you? Do others feel safe to come to you to talk . . . to share . . . to vent?

When the apostles asked Jesus to teach them to pray, it was because they saw the power of an intimate relationship with the Father. Abba, had a caring and loving concern for Jesus as He does for us. But that realtionship is based upon a humble and forgivng heart! When in His presence, one must realize how messed up we really are . . .

As Isaiah said when in God's presence: Woe is me! (Isaiah 6:5)

Can others come to us seeking and finding forgiveness?

Can they knock on our doors and find an open heart?

Or do they expect arrogance . . . hardness . . . selfishness?

So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
(Luke 11:9-10)

The apostles asked for a model prayer because they saw the power of an intimate relationship between Jesus and the Father. Do others see that in us?

Do they experience our prayers? Do they sense our dependence upon our DADDY? Can they expect an open door policy when approaching us?

May I encourage you to make a personal praye based upon the Model prayer? (Matthew 6:9-13)Challenge those in your sphere of influence to do the same. Let's see if our hearts are not changed a bit as we then approach God and others?

Born Twice . . . Die Once

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.
(Revelation 2:11)

God knows what is going on today. Just as He did when he spoke with John as he revealed His final triumph over death and Satan. He knows the state of the churches and the struggles of His people to remain faithful. he also knows those who simply going the motions . . . just acting out the role of a believer but never knowing Him personally!

Several times as he speaks to the churches through John, He repeats "He who has an ear, let Him hear":.In other words, be warned . . . this is not a drill . . . I am coming back and I will hold you accountable!

God demands that a person must repent fom sin and follow after His ways. It is not enough to simply acknowledge Christ as God and Savior. It is not enough to go to church and pray and attend Bible study. It is not enough to dress up on Sunday and remain in the filth Monday through Saturday. One must turn away from the sinful ways of this world and commit to the ways of Christ! It is a new way of life . . . a re-birth!

Nicodenus did not believe at first . . . not understanding how one could be born again.Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again”
(John 3:3)

This same Nicodemus was present at the cross of Jesus, assisting Joseph with the burial of Jesus' body. (John 19:38-41) He was not longer in the dark, but unashamed! He had new life . . . he was born again! What about you . . . your neighbors . . . your family? have you changed? Are you truly born again? Has there been a transformation that only the Holy Spirit can perform?

Every man must die . . . but the one who is born again in the Spirit of Jesus Christ, redeemed by His blood, will only die once. He will live forever with the Lord and not suffer the second death: eternal separation from God in hell.

Penalty Yards at Critcal Times.

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
(James 1:19-20)

Being an avid Baltimore Ravens fan, I cannot help but attribute these words to the officials! Bear with me a bit . . .

When officials seem to be blind or otherwise watching some other game than the one they are calling, it is easy to become angry. To my wife ,it is rather amusing to watch me go through a game. The officials are always against my Ravens! But I truly have to watch the way I react, so my young son realizes it is really just a game and I am not really angry! But watch the players . . . how many react in such a foolish way as to cost their team penalty yards at critcal times.

It is similar in our lives . . . We react without thinking. We say we cannot help it . . . we are only human after all!

Yes there is a time to be angry. We must however be very careful how we react. God's reaction is justified and with pure motives. Man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires ! Man acts out of selfishness and pride. We want our way, not God's will most often. We react because we or someone else feels hurt or slighted and we want to get even, nor justice! We seldom see the entire picture and we SIN!! We cause ourselves and others to suffer penalty yards at critcal times. Unlike a game however, these penalties can cause damage for a lifetime!

Here is great advice from Paul:

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
(Ephesians 4:26-26)

God gives us two ears, two eyes, two feet, two hands, , two arms, two legs . . . but only ONE mouth and to top it off a two-part cage (our teeth and lips)to keep the tongue under control! We know the danger of the tongue, but also the danger of any knee-jerk reaction.

Listen carefully and long . . . survey the situation . . . get the facts . . . and pray! See what God says about things and seel Godly counsel. Then respond in such a way that brings about God's desires for our lives and others as well.

Penalty yards at critcal times can be game changers . . . and life -changers as well!

Call a Friend . . . at Such a Time

And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
(Esther 4:14)

Many of us have it pretty good in this day of struggle and challenge. We read about all the econmic strife, foreclosures, and family breakups, yet we find ourselves a bit out of contact with reality. Even if we do find ourselves in a quandry, we have a me-first attitude . . . I have to take care of me first!

Well to degree, it is true. We must care for ourselves and our families. However, we cannot simply ignore others needs and go about life as usual, as if no one else exists.

Queen Esther found herself sitting pretty . . . a jewish girl becomes queen. Even as the Jews are being tortured and killed, she is protected . . . hidden away from all the troubles. Yet she is challenged to do something because of the position she holds. Because of who she was and the place God had positioned her, she could influence those in authority to help many in need. Before she acted though, she called on all the Jews to fast and pray on her behalf. She realized that this was going to be more than just her doing something . . . it would take God!

Where does God have you and me today? How can we help someone, even in the midst of out challenges? Do we have influence? Do we have resources? Are we placed in such a place, at such a time to change things? Has God challenged us to put things on the line?

We cannot cringe from the challenge, as difficult as it may be! May we be like Esther and realize we are called but we also need to call a friend (or two or three)to intercede for us at such a time. Each of us can do something special for someone else. As believers, we hold royal positions and possess great power.However, we must realize that at such a time, we need to realize we are not alone!

And if I perish, I perish
. (Esther 4:16) To God be the glory!

Learn From Others

What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day? Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city?
(Nehemiah 13:17-18)

Nehemiah had returned for a bit to the Persian King Artaxerxes. When he returned to Jerusalem, he found many things had not gone well. In fact, it was business as usual for some!

The Temple rooms were given out to friends.(Nehemiah 13:4-5)There was selling and buying on the Sabbath. (Nehemiah 13:15-16) There was marrying outside of the faith. (Nehemiah 13:23-24)

Had they not learned from others . . . from the past mistakes and sins of Israel?

The Hebrew nation had a histroy of being recsued by God, falling into sin, and then having to be rescued again by God. Each time, they suffered for their sin with death, enslavement, and other punishment from God. They could not learn from others well.

It's not much different today. We tell our children not to do what we have done. Learn from our mistakes. However, our youth tend to want to find out on their own. One thing they do discover: The consequences are often worse that they were for us!

But it is not just the young people. We too tend to be ignorant of others' mis-steps. At times, we think we can get away with sin with no consequences. Sin has a way of finding us sooner or later. It shows up in our finances, relationships, and in our mental well-being.

Let's make it a point to learn from others . . . in the Bible and in our nation's short histroy. Let's even learn from our own mistakes and make a commitment today to honor God so we too can say as Nehemiah once said:

Remember me with favor, my God.
(Nehemiah 13:31)

Work dedicated to God . . .with JOY!

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres.
(Nehemiah 11:27)

Everything we accomplish . . . all of our labor, should be dedicated to the Lord! In this way we are assured of His blessings and we know it pleases our God. But we also should give our work to God with joy, not grudgingly!

All the work . . . I mean ALL the work that Nehemiah supervised in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem was done with a covering from the Lord. He was so careful to stay in prayer and stay in a posture of thanksgiving. It gave Nehemiah great joy to sacrifice, labor, and give God the final project and all the credit.

Nehemiah would agree with Paul:

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
(Colossians 3:15-17)

How would our jobs be different if we dedicated our labor to the Lord each day? How would our families be changed . . . how would our relationships with our spouse and children be different? If we worked at all the various tasks in our lives with a mind to please God . . . . WOW! Would God not be pleased and we be changed?

I would wager that the world would be a bit different as well . . .

And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.
(Nehemiah 12:43)

I pray that the sounds of my praises and all of our rejoicing can be heard throughout our neighborhoods and work places this day! God is good . . . let the people know . . . let God know!!!!

From the Top Down . . .

Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors.
(Nehemiah 9:2)

A public display of humility and repentance. Now that is something rarely witnessed today! Oh, we will admit that we are a called out and peculair people. (1 Peter 2:9) We will admit we are saved by grace and a forgiven people. (Ephesians 2:8) We are quick to confess we have vivtory in Jesus! (1 Corinthians 15:57)

However, we are not a quick to admt our sin and our disrespect for a God who freely gives us grace and mercy! Read here in Nehemiah 9 as the people recited their history of disobedience and refusal to honor their God. Yet despite all this, God remained faithful. (Nehemiah 9:33)

Do we really look honestly at our lives and see just how merciful, how faithful God has been? Do we see our constant disobedience, disrespect, and unbelief? Doe we recognize just how often we leave God out, despite His please to include Him in our daily plans?

Our nation's walls are too falling apart. Our families are beginning to crumble at the very foundation. Even our churches have some wide gaps and the enemy is infiltrating. Would God not be pleased if we did as the people of Israel and made a firm agreement, sealed with our very hearts? It begins from the top down . . . yet we must be one on this! Nehemiah was the first to sign and the rest followed. (Nehemiah 10:1, Nehemiah 10:29) Are we in agreement today?

“In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”
(Nehemiah 9:38)

What's Next . . . Celebrate your God!

Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. (Nehemiah 7:4)

The walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt, yet the homes were still a shambles. What's next for Nehemiah? He did the logical thing and asked God! He was instructed to gather the people who had returned from captivity and after they were settled, the priest Ezra read the Law for all to hear. (Nehemiah 8:1)The Levites then taught the peole so they could clearly understand. (Nehemiah 8:8)

The people became said, yet after the readings, the people were instructed to rejoice . . . celebrate and do not be sad. (Nehemiah 8:9-10)This was to celebrate the Feast of Booths (or Tabernacles) as God instructed in Leviticus 23:42 and Deuteronomy 16:16-17. It was now a time to celebrate.

Been through some tough times? Had some real challenges? Well, it is never as bad as it seem! If we know the living God, we have a lot to celebrate. Don't wait for a holiday . . . celebrate the Lord today . . . right now!

Do Not Hide in Church

But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!” (Nehemiah 6:11)

Nehemiah was nearly finished the task of commpleting the wall, yet his enemies still confronted him. This time, they went as far as to send false prophets (Nehemiah 6:12) to trick him into a meeting within the temple. Yet Nehemiah realized that the job was not finished.

The church is not a place to hide when work needs to be done. Church is a place of worship . . . a place of instruction . . . a place of strength and encouragement. It is where we go for instruction in order to have a plan to attack the enemy we face on the outside. It may well be a place of shelter, but it is not a hideout for the timid!

Nehemiah did not fall for the trick. He continued the work and his enemies saw the power of God (Nehemiah 6:15-16).

All of us as believers have power (Acts 1:8). Do not hide in the church when the going gets rough. Do not shrink behind the veil, but stand boldly! There is work to be done within our families, within our neighborhoods and schools, within our government,and yes . . . within our churches!

The enemy would like nothing more than for CHRISTIANS to do nothing but go to church! As we resist the temptation to crumble under fear and threats from various angles, he will flee (James 4:7). Church is not a hiding place, but a headquarters for the soldiers of Christ!

Accountability

I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest!Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest you are charging them—one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.”
(Nehemiah 5:10-11)

A servant-leader does not simply call meetings and give orders. He or she sets the pace. As God leads and directs they follow by example.

Nehemiah called the leaders to stop putting so much of a burden on a paeople who were already sacrificing for the rebuilding of the walls. He set the example by sharing his own possessions. He called the leaders to be accountable. He did not simply take their word for it, but to make an oath!

Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had promised. I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, “In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!”
Nehemiah 5:12-13)

No matter who we lead or what position we may be in this day, Godly leaders . . . servant-leaders do not simply call meetings and give direction: they are part of the answer . . . they set the pace. God will remember!

Remember me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.
(Nehemiah 5:19)

Defend Our Turf

Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. (Nehemiah 4:13)

As the enmies began to plan to disrupt the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem Nehemiah 4:8), Nehemiah again prayed and organized the workers family by family . . . as some worked the others were armed for protection.

All throughout Nehemiah 3 we read how each family and each set of people (priests, temple servants, artisans, and the like did their part. Each group of people repaired a particular section of the wall. Each group took ownership of their part.

Each of us has a unique part in God's plan. We must do all we can to accomplish the task God has laid out for us. We must defend our families. We must be sure we defend our local pastor and the church we serve. We must defend our turf! It starts at home and moves as God directs us! (Ephesians 5)

I guess I am directing this mainly to the men, but it can be directed to all leaders within our communities and all believers in some sense. The cracks in the armor begin at home . . . spread to the churches . . . to the schools . . . and into our communities.

God's word directs us and it must be our sword . . . our foremost and most powerful weapon of choice. Will you join the battle to rebuild? I will . . . .(Nehemiah 4:23)

Personal Responsibility

. . .and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”
(Nehemiah 2:5)

Though Jerusalem was in a shambles, Nehemiah was in a safe place. (Nehemiah 1:1) He was a cupbearer for King Artaxerxes. Yet his concern was for his fellow Jews who were returning to the land of Judah . . . struggling, being made the laughing stock of society.

Are we in a safe place? Despite the struggles of those around us, are we comfortable and unconcerned?

Nehemiah hurt deeply for his people. (Nehemiah 1:4) He could not rest! He pleaded with God for mercy and admitted he too fell short of holiness! (Nehemiah 1:5-9) He was honest with God . . . honest with himself . . . and took personal responsibility!Nehemiah had found favor with the world (Nehemiah 1:11), yet he would use that favor and influence to rebuild not only his people and their city, but also to honor the Lord!

Will we use the influence we have to touch the lives of those less fortunate?

Will we use all we have to bring honor to God in these trying times?

Will we take personal responsibility and not leave it up to someone else as we remain in our safe place?

What About YOU?

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

God created man for fellowship. However, we (through Adam) decided to break that fellowship by choosing to disobey God's commandment not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(Genesis 2:15) As a result we all must suffer death and this sin nature we all possess (Romans 3:23)keeps us seperated from proper fellowship with God except for redemption offered through the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 7:26-27)

The payment for all sin has been met. We have been bought back . . . redeemed by Christ's blood through His death and resurrection. However, this gift must be accepted. One must have more than head knowledge of sin and its consequences. There must be a heart change . . . a conviction . . . and repentance and commitment. (Romans 10:9-10)

God promises to forgive sin and secure eternal life with Him (1 John 1:9) but not everyone is willing to believe it or commit to the terms of the agreement.

Just Enough

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver! (Proverbs 16:16)

Peter did not have it. (Acts 3:6) Yet what He did have could cause the lame to walk. Paul would share with Timothy that the lust for riches could cause people to forget about their faith.(1 Timothy 6:10)Money, gold, stocks, real estate . . . all good things in and of themselves, but when they rule and over-rule one's life, it becomes a god!

True wisdom, which comes from first knowing God, (Proverbs 9:10)can overcome any obstacle in life. Knowing God personally not only brings understanding, but also perserverence to stay in the race but power to help others prevail as well.

We may not be able to heal the sick or cause the lame to walk (though prayer can still work miracles), but with God's wisdom and understanding, we can help others to walk through a painful circumstance and be healed of unhealthy activity. Many times wealth and riches bring more headaches than we can imagine! Sometimes . . . I would venture to say many times, it is much easier to have just enough than way too much in life!

Sincere Prayer

Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."
(Acts 3:6)

As Peter and John were going to pray, they encountered a crippled beggar at the entrance of the Temple. Not having money, they shared what they could . . . sincere prayer in the power of the name of the Risen Christ!

Many times we have nothing physical to offer someone. Other times, nothing we could give would help. But as a believer in the Living God, we always have Christ to share . . . there is power in His name! Christ still offers salvation to those in need of eternal life. He still offers grace to the humble. He still offers peace in the midst of confusion. He still offers confort in the center of our worst pain. He still offers contentment when there seems to be no answers. . . to those who will accept Him!

Sincere prayer . . . offered for and with one in need still brings results because in Jesus' name there is authority in heaven and earth! But do we have the time . . . the intenstinal fortitude . . . the desire to stand in the gap for those in need? It is one thing to pray privately . . . in our closet, but are we willing to risk our reputation or our friendships to say "Let me share Christ with you."

Everyone needs to have the opportunity to know His power. Later on, facing the Sanhedrin, Peter would repeat this with the local church leaders as they questioned the authority of the disciples:

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."(Acts 4:12)

Yes, there is power as we pray. Give others what we possess . . . allow them to experience the Living Savior who still rules and reigns! Sincere prayer changes things!

Commit to Prayer

Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.
(Hebrews 13:18)

Paul sought to please the Lord in every way, yet he knew he was weak in his flesh. He realized his weakneses and acknowledged his need for prayer from others to keep him pure before God. In the previous verses, he asked for obdedience to leaders. This verse shows the connection between Godly leaders and our responsibility to not simply obey them, but to constantly pray for them.

Would it not be so unique if our political leaders, especially the believing ones, would openly ask for prayer? How mush easier it would be to support them if we knew of their desire to please God over man! No matter the case, we can still commit to pray for all of our leaders . . . political and spiritual that they seek to honor the Lord and in turn we serve one another honorably.

While God does not require us to follow ungodly leadership, he still desires us to pray for all in authority. (1 Timothy 2:2) Prayer still changes things.As we pray, we can also discover areas where we are lacking in obedience to God and in support of our leaders.

Encourage those in authority who are seeking to please the Lord. This month (October) is clergy appreciation month. Drop a note . . . send an e-mail . . . give a hug to your pastor, minister, or others who serve your spiritual needs. If you have a local government leader who is doing his/her best to make Godly choices, let them know!

It is hard making the sacrifices required to serve the Lord and His people. Our leaders are human . . . commit to pray!

I am special

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
(Hebrews 13:5)

The economy has always had its ups and downs. The stock market should not be a barometer of our life's worth. Our check book does not measure the love and concern we have for our families. Our value in life is not gaged by the size of our pay check. What we have, or what others possess, should not motivate us.

Listen to Paul as he shares a great secret to living a Godly life . . .

. . .I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
(Philippians 4:11-13)

Contentment . . . inner peace knowing God is in control, knowing He is right in the middle of things, brings a confidence beyond conparison! Things may not look too good to the casual observer, but things will be all right! God's promises are secure.

Accepting what God has for me is key to peaceful living. I am special to God and what He has for me is special. The more I learn to accept my life and not run after the the life of others, the more I will enjoy this life and anticipate the life to come with Christ!

I want what God wants for me and I can only getting by being one with Him, not this world!

Be free to shine

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13-14)

Many do not accept Christ because they are not ready or want to experience life first. "Wait until later" they say . . . It is one thing they do not understand: Life in Christ is not prison, but freedom from prison . . . the prison of sin, guilt, and shame!

Christ frees us from the power of sin. He frees us from the pressures of sin. He frees us from the pain caused by sin . . . by us and to others.

There is freedom in Christ to know we are redeemed and now have the power to choose to do right. No longer does the past haunt us nor the future taunt us. We have a sincere hope (promise)of life with God for eternity.

Darkness is swallowed up in light and we can now walk boldly into the areas of life we once feared. We can say no to people, places, and situations that hurt us and yes to the things that are indeed good and positive for our lives. The believer is ruled by the King of the world rather than the prince of darkness.

Paul reminds us to now walk as children of light if we are indeed God's children. (Ephesians 5:8) Be bold . . . light up the world . . . or at least your little section anyway! Be free to shine!

What Do Our Kids Really Believe?

A teen/young adult’s life is full of change . . . They question the world . . . faith . . . everything!

yet we all have questions: What are any of us really sure of anyway?

Try making a physical list . . . the sun will rise, the ocean waves will continue to go in and out, God is still God! What else?

What are we unsure of? Will I marry . . . will I graduate . . . will I keep my job . . . will I have children . . . Does God care?

What do we actually control . . . What does God control . . . or need to have control of in our lives?

Does it scare you know a lot of things are out of our control . . . having doubt?

It is OK to have doubts . . .Even John the Baptist had doubts! (Luke 7:18-19)

So how can we be sure . . . how can we trust God?

Read Philippians 4:8-9 again . . .

How can we be sure . . . how can we replace doubt with faith . . .we work at it!!!!

The Only Way

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
(2 Peter 3:9)

What Peter is NOT saying is that eventually everyone will get to heaven . . . if that were the case than why would Jesus go through all the pain, suffering, and sacrifice? That would be so inconsistent with the rest of the Bible! God's Word is still true and all of His decrees will stand!

Peter is reiterating however that it is God's desire that no one is lost. This is why Christ went through it all . . . even if just for one!

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
(Luke 19:10)

God is giving everyone time to repent. Like in Ninevah (Jonah 3:10), God gives everyone the chance to turn from their evil lifestyles and decision-making before His judgment. The challenge for us is that we do not know when our time on earth is up, so we must decide now rather than later! No one is promised tomorrow and the decision must be made while we are yet living! It is too late once we are facing Him!

Yes God is patient, but He is also true to His word. We must acknowledge Him as our Lord and Savior if we want eternity on His terms! It's the only way! (John 14:6)

The Healing Process

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

(Matthew 26:36-38)

Gethsemane . . . meaning oil press . . . east of Jerusalem on the Mt. of Olives . . . where olives were crushed and ground . . . where Jesus' heart would be crushed and broken for each one of us!

Yet just as the healing properties are olive oil are known, Jesus began His healing process for each of us!

Nothing we face today can compare even to the beginning of Jesus' suffering for us. Even as Christ suffered, his friends and committed disciples could not stick with Him . . . they fell asleep. They were there, but not involved . . . not able to help! As we suffer we may feel all alone even though folks are with us. However, God is there . . . He will never leave us! We may not see Him, but He is not sleeping! But like our Savior . . . we need to cry out to Him . . . let Him know our pain! (Matthew 26:39-44)

As the Lord encourages us, let us remember to be there for those in need . . . not to sleep on their pain but to remain with them through their suffering.

Gethsemene comes for everyone at some point in life. This valley is usually the beginning of the healing process. It is rock bottom! One can only go up. Are we willing to admit our needs to God and accept His healing in our lives? Even more so are we willing to be a part of the healing process for others?

Battleground of the Heart

Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.
(Hosea 10:12)

It is never too late to return to the Lord . . . to His promises, to His truths . . . to His commandments and requirements . . . as long as we are still living on this side of glory. The more we delay, the closer we do get to being too late however!

Israel was living in a deceitful and hypocritical manner. (Hosea 9:2) God is about to judge them. Once again they are offered a chance to repent and be restored. Much like the farmer, at times the ground of our hearts and souls needs to be broken up and replanted. We need to do some plowing, tilling, and reseeding. We need to prepare for the coming rain!

Weeds of greed . . . hard hearts, and withered lives need pruning and encouragement. The grace and mercy offered by our God needs to be lived out in how we treat others. Loyalty to the Lord needs to be shown in our lifestyle. Repentance needs to take place! God's promises can be restored and His blessings can once again rain down upon us.

Winning the battleground of the heart is vital to our relationship with Christ. What does the soil of your heart look like today? (Matthew 13:18-23)

Today is the day to begin working on the garden soil!

Because HE Lives . . .

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.
(Revelation 1:7)

Daniel wrote of this event (Daniel 7:13) and Matthew too recalled it. (Matthew 24:30) Jesus IS returning and sooner rather than later! No one will be able to hide from Him and everyone will know it's Him. It will be a sad day indeed for those who doubted! Israel especially will mourn knowing they had missed the message when he first arrived! (Zechariah 12:10; John 19:34-37)

It does not have to be such a sad day however, In fact, today can be the day you make a decision to not simply realize that Jesus is Lord and Savior, but to invite Him to be your Lord and Savior!

Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.
(Hebrews 3:15)

With so much going on around us and so many financial, political, social and world challenges facing us all, I cannot understand how anyone cannot see it clearly! I just could not face another day without knowing Jesus has me covered and is with me through it all. Even when the bills are more than the money and the to-do list has more hours than the day contains, I can trust that Jesus is with me! I can indeed face tomorrow!

Because HE lives . . .because Jesus lives inside of me and reigns from heaven above . . . and will come again for me and all who believe . . . I can live despite and above the circumstances!

I urge you all . . . take a deep look inside and decide today what is real and what is make believe . . . what is a lie and WHO is the TRUTH . . . As for me and my house . . . well we have ourminds (and hearts ) made up.

We will serve the LORD!!!! (Joshua 24:15)

Consistent teaching

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
(1John 4:1)

Many today are teaching and promoting error in their churches and as they preach. Whether it is to keep those who folow them or simply to not offend anyone, many today entertain only a portion of God's truths. There is only one truth and it comes from the Holy Spirit, not false sprits. After all there can be money made in preaching today. With all the turmoil, people want to feel good! It is easy to be led astray!

Paul also referenced this topic in addressing the order within church services. (1 Corinthians 14:32) Not everybody has something good to say or the words of God to speak! God is not about confusion and His words are clear and consistent. The true man of God speaks "thus saith the Lord" not this is what I say. So how do we know the difference?

First we have to know the Lord for ourselves. The bible cannot be understood without the spirit of God guiding us. To test the spirits on must know the Spirit! We must read the Word for ourselves and know the basic truths of the bible so we can discern false teaching from consistent biblical teaching. Consitent teaching from God's Word builds confidence in knowing His will and His desires. God has not changed over the years . . . but man has gotten worse! Satan is still dangling the carrot stick out there to spread lies and ruin lives! When you find a good, biblically-based church home cherish it and support that pastor and the vision God has given to him.

Beware beloved . . . trust God and God alone!

Do YOU Believe?

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26)

Martha beleived the Messiah would come one day. She believed there would a resurrection when the dead would come to a new life. (John 6:35-40) Jesus let her know that HE was indeed the resurrecton. He is the life for all those who believe.

Matha responded, Yes, Lord, I believe that YOU are the Christ! (John: 11:27) Jesus went on to raise her brother Lazarus from the grave.

Of course this points to the power CHrist has over life and death. He alone is the way to eternal life. There is no other substitute . . no other sacrifice . . . no other way!

One day each of us will come before the throne of Almighty God . . . all the dead . . . great and small . . . saved and unsaved . . . and we will judged according to our works. (Revelation 20:11-15)

Where will you stand? Is your name written in the Book of Life or will hell be your eternal destination? NOW is the time to decide as Martha once did . . . while you are living! Do YOU believe?

Live out LOUD . . . despite the circumstances!

The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.
(Psalm 145:17-18)

Righteous and loving . . . what wonderful characterisitics of our Daddy! Don't we pray that as parents and teachers we can be both righteous and loving!

God always has perfect judgment. He never blows it when dealing with us, His children. He always has the right amount of discipline to metthe circumstance.

Yet God always knows when to give grace . . . when to grant forgiveness which leads us to repentance. He knows just how to get us to see ourselves for who we are and how much we need His hand of guidance along the way.

God both preserves and destroys without tearing down our character or blowing up our egos. He knows just when and how to do what!

God is full of compassion and slow to anger (Psalm 145:8), answering those who cry out to Him (Psalm 145:19).

But how can we experience all God is, unless we give Him all we are?

If we can call to mind an infant crying out to his parents in the middle of the night or a child experiencing a terrible nighmare, we can envision this kind of cry. . . not afraid or ashamed to cry out!

If we can just hear the shouts of "TOUCHDOWN!" after a score or a rowdy "YES!" after a walk-off homerun, we can picture the praise God desires from our lips. No embarrassment in acting ridiculously happy.

To experience all God is and has for us, we have to live out loud, despite the circumstances! Let people know Who we know . . . so we all can get to know Him better and be more like HIM!!

Family First

See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.
(Hebrews 3:12-13)

Refusing to trust in the Word of God is a dangerous and deadly sin . . . and it is rampant in today's culture. It is not simply an issue in society, but in the church! Even here in Hebrews, the author is addressing believers . . . brothers who have been warned not to turn away from the living God!

It is so important for us to encourage one another and be there for each other in stressful times. These days bring many challenges for everyone, especialy those of us who call Jesus our Lord and Savior. There are so many easy temptations to choose other options rather than depend upon the Lord, seek Godly advice and pray with and for one another. The Church Body is a viable resource for help . . . as long as we are connected! I like how the Amplified Bible puts David's words:

BEHOLD, HOW good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
(Psalm 133:1)

This is not the day to run from the Church and fellow believers. It is the day to embrace the fellowship . . . the koinonia (intimate communion)of the family of God! Family first . . . there is help at home!

The Power of His Word

The centurion replied, Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
(Matthew 8:8)

The centurians were officers in charge of one hundred soldiers. They were looked upon favorably in the New Testament writings. This centurion clearly understands authority. He understands how the word of one in authority can make things happen. (Matthew 8:9) He realized that Jesus did not have to go to his home to heal the paralyzed servant there. He was humbled under His authority. Jesus' words would be enough. All Jesus had to was speak and the servant would be healed!

If we only had that kind of faith. If we only allowed Jesus' authority to rule over us in such a way. If we only realized the power of His word! If we were so humble as this centurion!

As Jesus was about to return to heaven He gave His followers (and us as well) some final words . . .

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
(Matthew 28:18) If we would only believe and use that power today, I wonder how our lives would change? There is power in the name of Jesus!

Set Like Flint

Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.
(Isaiah 50:7)

The prophet lets the people know that his only real help is the Lord. Though things look bleak for the nation and for Isaiah, he realizeds that one day, he will be honored by God.

Things may be at their lowest for us . . . as individuals, as a family, even as a nation, yet we can look to God for assurance that one day it will all work out! One day God will say "Well done". (Matthew 25:21-23)

Setting his face like flint implies that the prophet will be determined to face his opposition without fear . . . even knowing the opposition poses a real threat and they are an imposing foe. In fact, this is fulfilled in Jesus (Luke 9:51) when He begins His journey back to Jerusale (by way of Samaria) to be handed over for His ultimate sacrifice.

Are we set like flint and determined to follow God's plans for us . . . despite the costs?

Travel Light

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
(Matthew 11:28-30)

Jesus is letting the Jews know that all the heavy burdens the Jewish leaders were placing upon them could be relieved by following Him. The religious ceremonies, unfair taxes, circumcision laws, (Acts 15:10) and other ridiculous practices (Matthew 23:4) all were done away with as folks accepted the Messiah.

The yoke Jesus offers is a partnership with Him . . . He will carry the burdens with us and for us as we labor for Him. He will pull the lion's share of the load when we are weak. We can lean on Him and allow Christ to do the work as we trust Him and surrender to Him. On the most burdensome days, when we look back we see one set of footprints . . . HIS!

The burden man puts upon us is heavy! It weighs us down as we attempt to please people who can never be happy. We are constantly dragged down by folks who just will not stop seeking more . . . pushing for better . . . needing bigger! This world and all its institutions and organizations cannot possibly do what God promises the believer. True peace and satisfaction can only come when one is in Christ!

Come to Jesus . . .but leave the baggage behind. Travel light!

Today is the Day

"See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."
(Malachi 4:5-6)

The Lord IS coming back . . . that is for certain. However, God is continually giving us chances to repent . . . to turn from our wicked ways and accept Him as Lord and Savior. Here in the final book of the Old Testament He lets us know that He will send His messenger before He returns. Some believe this was John the Baptist, while others belive this may have been when Elijah appeared with Moses at the Transfiguration (Matthew 16:28-17:8). Others believe it will be an Elijah-like figure to appear at the end times.

The bottom line is this: before one dies or before Christ returns, whichever comes first, one must acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord and repent of their sin. If we do not turn from our sinful ways, there is a curse awaiting. We are doomed to eternal hell without the blood of Christ!

Don't wait . . . today is the day to call on the Lord and compel others to do the same!

It Will Be OK!

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

How is it possible to be an effective CHRISTian in such a world in which we live? Paul gives a few basic yet life-changing instructions.

No matter the circunmstance we find ourselves in, we must mantain our joy. Not joy in what we are going through, but joy in the fact that the Lord is right there with us. We are not alone!

We must stay in constant communication with our Father as Jesus did when He walked this earth. Speaking with the One in control and praying with fellow believers of the same mind keeps us in communion with God and our believing family. Private and corporate prayer are essential to keep the believer encouraged, confident, and connected. Reading Scriptures daily is also a source of hearing God's words to us each day.

Finally we must realize it could always be worse! Be thankful for what we have and where God has us. After all, we have a home in heaven and something far better than anything this world could ever give to us. Thank God daily for His grace, mercy, and promise of eternal life with Him! This world is temporary!

God has us just where He wants us to be. He has us and the entire world in His hands and it will be ok!

CEO or Servant

. . . .so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
(John 13:4-5)

Jesus rose from the Passover meal and began to wash the feet of the dsciples . . . even the one who would betray Him later! Jesus . . . God in the flesh was about to demonstrate the mark of a true leader . . . a true follower of Himself. To follow Christ, we all must desire to serve others, even those we know have plans to put a monkey wrench into our best plans!

Most of us desire the best for ourselves and others. There is nothing wrong with that. It is how we go about getting there that makes the real impact. Jesus came to serve (Matthew 20:28). He showed by example, here at the meal and later as the ultimate sacrifice for you and me at the cross. It is how we succeed that matters most.

Are willing to sacrifice our reputation to show others real success? Are we willing to get our hands dirty . . . to stoop lower that we desire . . . to help the least of our brothers and sisters? (Matthew 25:40)

CEO or servant . . . one in the same in Jesus' eyes!

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
(James 1:2-6)

With so many sources for knowledge and information in this day, we often forget THE Source! Knowing, respecting, and living for Christ isthe foundation of any knowledge at all. (Proverbs 1:7) What good does it do to have all knowledge and not know God? What real good can come from that?

So many of us today claim to know the Lord and have a personal relationship with Him yet we still rely more upon the world for all the answers . . . politics, business, the universities. James is clear: if we have questions . . . if we lack information, GOD should be our first source of information!

Why do we first go to others for answers to this world when we know the CREATOR of this world personally? Sometimes we Christians can be so ridiculous! Let's change this today!

The Apha and Omega Professor

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

As one given the challenge to mentor and guide youth, I realize daily my shortcomings and failures. I realize the youth of today may actually know more than I do in many subject areas. However, that does not keep me from growing and learning from them!

Knowledge alone does not make one successful. Heck, I just finished my Masters' work myself at 51 and am realizing there is yet more to learn! We can never stop learning, especially if we are in a teaching / discipleship role! Wisdom that reaches our youth can only come from God! It does not come in a how-to book or a five-step plan. I comes from spending time in His Word and making the proper application to our lives and the lives of those we are given to mentor.

As we parents, teachers, mentors, and other role models face another academic year, may we first commit to coninual learning from God, the Apha and Omega Professor!

Whom do you choose to believe?

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
(Numbers 23:19)

Isn't is good to know and trust a God that keeps His word? It is both a comforting and somewhat traumatic fact however!

Consider God's promses . . .

Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.
(Hebrews 13:5; Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:5; 1 Chronicles 28:20)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
(1 John 1:9)

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
(Romans 10:13; Acts 2:21)

These are such comforting promises . . . knowing our God loves us, forgives us, and keeps us from eternal hell . . . if we choose!

But consider these words . . .

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
(Revelation 20:11-15)

And this warning . . .

So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion,during the time of testing in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested and tried me,though for forty years they saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger,‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ” See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. 15 As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
(Hebrews 3:7-15; Psalm 95:7-11)

Not so comforting . . . it is to the believer! We cannot pick and choose the promises of God we accept or dismiss. He does not lie. He is a promise keeper! The decision to respond is up to the individual. Whom do you choose to believe?

Stand Up in the Crowd!

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."
(John 7:37-38)

A few days into the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus stood up and began to teach the crowds. Of course, they doubted Him and accused Him of being a phony with no authority to teach. The accusations continued and the high priests attempted to have Him arrested.

As he spoke the words aboove, some believed, others doubted, and many would have Him arrested. However, the Temple guards could not . . . would not arrest Jesus. The high priests were obviously upset, yet Nicodemus, one of the priest, spoke up (the same Nicodemus from (John 3:3).

“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
(John 7:51)

Nicodemus showed up in hiding in John 3, but stood up in John 7. He eventually became a Christ follower despite his peers' unbelief. Today, believers need to stand up in the crowd and not back down to the pressure! We need to stand for what we believe . . . in Whom we believe!

Blessed to be a Blessing

(Written August 29, 6:00 am following Hurricane Irene going through Maryland)

Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late . . .
(Psalm 127:1-2)

Two days after hurricane Irene visited our home (and four days after a earthquake shook the area for a few minutes), I sit here ready to go off to begin new school year as if all is well!

Spiritually speaking, all IS well indeed. Though I stayed up all night Saturday through Sunday at sunrise to ride out the hurricane making sure our basement did not flood (using a small power inverter and our truck battery connected to our pump) I realize it was God who watched over us. As the trees bent with the force winds, as the rain beat down on our home, even as the earth trembled and our home shook during the quake, it was God protecting . . . God holding back the waters from our basement . . . God keeping the trees from breaking and damaging our home!

As we looked around the neighborhood following the hurricane, we saw chunks of trees littering the street directly in front of our home. Behind our home a tree snapped and took down power lines (which is why we are still without electricity!). Our next door neighbor’s basement flooded. Then, as we began clean-up Sunday, my father-in-law told us to come and get his generator so we could have minimum power in our home! We were then able to assist our neighbors in drying out basements and keeping food fresh by sharing extension cords to and from our power supply. Blessed to be a blessing indeed!

God indeed watches over the home, the family and the individuals who trust in Him! He honors the efforts we make to keep things safe and secure, but ultimately it is God! Whether it is a vicious storm, powerful waves, whipping winds, or a thunderous quake, He has ALL power in His hand . . . even the power of a gentle and secure hand of protection!

Stay plugged in!

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
(Acts 1:8)

Initially, we experienced our first earthquake as a family on Tuesday August 23 at 1:51 pm. As if that was not enoigh to feel the power of God, the coming weekend brought more challenges as Hurricane Irene pummeled our area in Maryland and along the entire Eastern seaboard! Though we did not have to experience evacuation and suffered no real physical damage (thank God!), we did lose power at 1:00 Sunday and eventually a borrowed generator, we were able to keep the interior house dry and save the food as well. Electrical power returned today (Wednesday) at 3:00 am., but His power was evident throughout.

There is power . . .in prayer, in God's people, and because of the Holy Spirit within us. Stay plugged in!
